Parasound JC 2 BP Preamp

Many owners of Parasound's flagship JC 2 preamplifier have requested the ability to integrate it into their surround systems, and Parasound has now responded with the new JC 2 BP (BP standing for bypass). Parasound claims that the modified potentiometer board, new control software, and circuits which remove the volume control from the signal path do not compromise the JC 2's performance in any way.Continue reading Parasound JC 2 BP Preamp

Flexible 19-Inch E-Paper Will be Mass-Produced by LG

Samsung may've ditched the e-paper production business, but South Korean neighbor LG has throw its weight behind producing that 19-inch flexible e-paper we heard about a few months back. A 9.7-inch color e-paper screen is also in the works. More »

Even a Non-Gamer Would Struggle to Resist the Mag Gun Controller

Click here to read Even a Non-Gamer Would Struggle to Resist the Mag Gun Controller

Even as someone not very prone to gaming, I'm attracted to the idea of the Mag Gun controller. It works with multiple consoles, has logical controls, and looks like it'd make a first-person shooter the highlight of an afternoon. More »

Eagle Phone concept hopes to be adopted by LG

Eagle Phone concept hopes to be adopted by LG

Designer Eugene Kim has come up with the Eagle Phone, where he hopes that this design will be picked up by the good people at LG as part of the LG American electronic design competition. To keep up with the times, it makes perfect sense for this conceptual phone to play a whole lot with touchscreen technology as it mimics the image of an eagle in flight when fully opened. According to Kim, not a single bit of the Eagle's surface will go to waste, and whenever it is folded, a tiny gap is created between the panels. A fully touchscreen phone from all angles? Sounds neat, but is it practical since you'll be touching something at all times when the handset is unlocked, right?

Samsung Galaxy Tab spotted in the wild

I’m sure there are always interesting things to see on commuter trains in Sydney, Australia. But a Samsung Galaxy Tab? That’s a rare spot indeed.

Is it me or are all these big tech firms taking their sweet time in getting their tablets out to the public? They’ve all announced their plans to enter the market by releasing tablet intended to go head-to-head with the Apple iPad, but actual working models are thin on the ground. To say the least.

However, one of these recently-announced products has now been spotted in the wild. On a commuter train in Sydney, Australia. Bizarrely.

Samsung rather quietly announced the Galaxy Tab in June. So quietly in fact that no one seemed exactly sure what it was set to be called. It seems those sources which mentioned the Galaxy Tab rather than the Galaxy Tape were the ones to listen to.

The rud specs of the Samsung Galaxy Tab are a 7-inch Super AMOLED flat-panel screen (although bigger versions will later be made available), Google Android OS, a 1.2 Ghz A8 processor, and 16GB of on-board memory expandable up to 48GB thanks to a MicroSD memory card slot.

And that all appears to be in order, if the Electronista video of a random “telco worker” testing the device in the wild reveals anything.

Granted it’s short, and the conversation doesn’t reveal much. But this does mean the Galaxy Tab exists and its development is far enough along that Samsung has released some into the wild for proper testing. The tester describes the device as “awesome,” and labels it as “very different” when compared to the iPad. Both of which are positive.

We clearly need to know about the Galaxy Tab before we can properly predict whether it will be a success or not. Pricing and the timing of its release (preferably before the iPad 2 is announced early next year) are going to be important factors. But this video suggests Samsung is heading along the right lines, and that Apple could soon have some serious competition.

Gadget News For This Day

eStation Zeen is HP Slate?

Reach deep into the grey matter and try to recall a little post we did back on December 30th of 2009. That's the day we learned about HP's filing for the “Zeen” trademark on a “portable handheld device.” Now here we are today, eight months and one major aquisition later, with an FCC filing for a very tablety device with 802.11b/g/n WiFi. The name? HP eStation Zeen. Unfortunately, that's all we know due to the short-term confidentiality request put in place until December 31st. Still, product CQ720A looks very much like the mythical HP Slate don't you think? Now if only we knew the chosen OS, price, ship date, consumer or business focus, and about a dozen or so other details. Baby steps people, baby steps.

Microsoft Arc Touch Mouse rumor resurfaces, expected in September for $69.95 (updated)

It was almost exactly a month ago that we reported on swirling rumors of Microsoft pulling together a multitouch-capable mouse to call its own, while earlier this week we saw the company's Twitter feed enlivened with teasers of a mysterious new touch-input device. Coincidence? No chance, says Neowin, whose insider source confirms the Arc Touch Mouse moniker and also adds that launch is expected in September. It's said this peripheral will come with just basic touch functionality initially, with multitouch presumably being thrown in via a later update. Sounds like Microsoft's version of the Magic Trackpad, though the Mouse part of its name suggests it'll also be able to track around your desktop like a more conventional rodent as well. That'd certainly offer more versatility than the stationary Apple option, but we have our doubts about the ergonomics of using a flat mouse over long periods of time. More should be known soon, provided @msfthardware keeps feeling loquacious.

Update: Never mind waiting for MSFT to tell us, the Arc Touch Mouse has appeared in a reseller's price list with an MSRP a few cents south of $70 — right in line with Magic Trackpad and Magic Mouse pricing.

U-Build MONOPOLY Game

U-Build MONOPOLY (Images courtesy Hasbro)
By Andrew Liszewski

MONOPOLY is still the king of board games, but it unfortunately requires a hefty time investment to play a single game. And while no one likes to see companies tampering with the classics, I like what Hasbro has done with this U-Build version of the game. From what I can tell the gameplay is mostly the same, but the board has been replaced with a series of configurable tiles letting you build a classic 60-minute version of MONOPOLY, or leave out certain properties so it takes half that time. It also appears to include a few updates to MONOPOLY’s houses and hotels with skyscrapers and factories, but the original concepts appear to hold true. $19.99, available at probably any store with a healthy stock of board games.

Apple Enables Music Streaming To iOS Devices From iDisk

Apple Enables Music Streaming To iOS Devices From iDisk

While Apple's rumored cloud-based iTunes service hasn't surfaced yet, something similar has been released by the fruity company. The iDisk app has been updated, and it now allows its devices to stream music to iOS devices from the online storage of iDisk. The updated version of iDisk supports background music streaming and public file sharing among multiple devices simultaneously. There are still some pretty obvious limitations, such as the lack of playlist support, and the fact that 20GB might not be enough to support your entire music library. You’ll need a MobileMe subscription in order to enjoy this, so if you've already got said subscription and an iOS device, why not give it a test drive?

Remains of the Day: There's a hole in my PDF

A security hole that is. Also, the government block one publication's attempt to find out about an Apple antitrust case—so of course it must be going on! And the European Commission's got a new smartphone dans la maison.
